Brown Swiss is one of the oldest dairy breeds, known for robustness, longevity and milk suited to cheese-making. Calves are less common than Holstein, which is exactly why a well-described lot gets attention.
Type and origin
The breed originates in the Alpine regions of Switzerland and is kept widely in Central Europe, often under the name Braunvieh. Animals are solid brown in shades from light grey-brown to dark, large framed and strong in the leg. In several countries the breed has been selected for a more beef-capable body than the Holstein, so the calves can be a little sturdier.
Typical use
Heifer calves are bought as dairy replacements by farms that want a hardy, long-lived cow. Bull calves go to fattening, where the breed’s frame is an advantage compared with the narrower Holstein bull. Farms that mix breeds in the herd sometimes choose Brown Swiss to diversify milk composition. See dairy replacement calves for Poland for how replacement lots are judged.
What we buy
We buy Brown Swiss and Brown Swiss-cross heifer calves for dairy replacement and bull calves for rearing. Please state whether pedigree papers exist and whether calves come from herds under milk recording. Our weight bands are 52–90 kg for dairy calves and 110–150 kg for starter calves. Weaned or stocker calves (220–350 kg) are bought for beef breeds only, so a weaned dairy-breed lot is not what we are looking for. Put exact weights, ages and ear-tag numbers in your offer.
Where the calves come from
Brown Swiss herds are found in Germany, Czechia and Slovakia and in other Central European countries on our list. See our supplier pages for Germany, Czechia and Slovakia. Supply is smaller than for Holstein, so a regular lot of even size is valuable.
Offering a Brown Swiss lot
The most useful first message is short and complete: country and region, breed and cross, number of head, sex split, age and weight range, feeding and health history, ear-tag numbers, the documents available and the week you can load. We buy for rearing and finishing farms in Poland, and we start with a trial lot where a new supplier is involved. Payment and trial terms are agreed with each supplier. Read how we buy for price basis, transport and minimum lots, then send your offer through the supplier form or the partner page. You can also write to biuro@eurocieleta.pl or call +48 691 900 728.
