Simmental and Fleckvieh Calves for Polish Farms

Simmental, called Fleckvieh in German-speaking Europe, is the most widespread dual-purpose breed on the continent. For a calf buyer that makes it an unusual line: the same name can cover a male calf for fattening and a heifer for a milking herd. This page explains how we read Simmental offers and what makes a lot easy to buy.

Type and origin

The breed comes from the Simmental valley in Switzerland and spread across Central Europe, where it is kept in very large numbers. Animals are red-and-white or yellow-and-white, usually with a white head, and well framed. Fleckvieh herds in Germany, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary are often selected for both milk and beef, so the calves carry a good muscle frame without being a pure beef type. Simmental is also used as a sire on dairy cows, which produces the crossbred calves that appear in many mixed lots.

Typical use

Bull calves go mainly to fattening: they grow into a large frame and finish with respectable conformation on a maize-silage and concentrate system. Heifers can be raised as dairy replacements or as suckler cows, depending on the farm. A buyer who wants a single breed for both flows will often start here. For the beef side of the decision see what fattening units in Poland ask for; for the dairy side, dairy replacement calves for Poland.

What we buy

We look for vigorous Simmental and Fleckvieh bull calves for rearing and fattening, and for heifer calves that suit further rearing. Say clearly whether a lot is purebred Fleckvieh, Simmental-sired on dairy cows, or crossed with a beef breed. Prices and exact specifications are agreed per lot. Our weight bands are 52–90 kg for dairy calves, 110–150 kg for starter calves and 220–350 kg for weaned or stocker calves, the last for beef breeds only. Put exact weights, ages and ear-tag numbers in your offer.

Where the calves come from

Fleckvieh calves reach us mostly from Germany, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary, where the breed is common in commercial herds. See our supplier pages for Germany, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary.
