Blonde d’Aquitaine Calves: Large-Frame French Beef

Blonde d’Aquitaine is a large French beef breed with long growth and a lean carcass. Calves are bought by farms that finish heavier animals and want size and muscle, often through crosses with dairy cows.

Type and origin

The breed was formed in south-west France from several regional types. Animals are wheat-coloured to light fawn, tall and long, with good muscling and fine bone. Mature size is large, and the breed is later maturing than the British types, so it fits systems that finish heavy.

Typical use

Purebred calves are bought for rearing to heavy finishing weights. Blonde-sired calves from dairy or suckler cows are a common cross for farms that want more carcass than a Holstein bull alone can give. The breed asks for good feeding in the growing phase to use its potential. Compare Charolais and Limousin when deciding between continental types.

Large frame has a practical side. Calves need space, a steady feeding plan and housing that matches their size, and buyers who finish heavy animals plan the whole programme around that. A lot with consistent age and weight is much easier for a farm to fit into pens and feed budgets than a lot with a wide spread.

What we buy

We buy Blonde d’Aquitaine and Blonde-cross calves for rearing and fattening, in the weight bands below. State clearly the sire and dam breeds, sex, age and weight, and mention calving ease problems, if any, in the lot. Our weight bands are 52–90 kg for dairy calves, 110–150 kg for starter calves and 220–350 kg for weaned or stocker calves, the last for beef breeds only. Put exact weights, ages and ear-tag numbers in your offer.

Where the calves come from

Supply comes mainly from France; see our France supplier page and selling French calves to Poland.
