Salers is a hardy French breed from the volcanic uplands of the Auvergne, used for beef and traditionally for milk. Calves are bought by farms that want robust animals for forage-based systems.
Type and origin
The breed originates in the Cantal area of the Massif Central. Animals are a deep mahogany red with a curly coat, lyre-shaped horns in many lines, and a strong maternal character. Salers cows are known for calving easily, mothering well and managing on grass in cold or rough conditions.
Typical use
Calves go to rearing and finishing on forage-rich systems, and heifers can be kept as suckler cows. The breed does not grow as fast as the large continental types, so buyers choose it for hardiness, calm management and meat quality rather than for a maximum weight. Cross calves by a Salers sire appear in some lots.
Because the breed is a traditional one, buyers also ask about the herd: how calves were raised, whether they were reared on the dam or on milk replacer, and how they were weaned. Clear answers raise the value of a lot more than adjectives about the breed.
What we buy
We consider Salers and Salers-cross calves for rearing and finishing. Please state whether the lot is purebred, whether calves are horned, and give age, weight and sex. Supply is limited, so a short description of the herd helps us place the offer. Our weight bands are 52–90 kg for dairy calves, 110–150 kg for starter calves and 220–350 kg for weaned or stocker calves, the last for beef breeds only. Put exact weights, ages and ear-tag numbers in your offer.
Where the calves come from
The breed is concentrated in central France; see our France supplier page and selling French calves to Poland.
Offering a Salers lot
The most useful first message is short and complete: country and region, breed and cross, number of head, sex split, age and weight range, feeding and health history, ear-tag numbers, the documents available and the week you can load. We buy for rearing and finishing farms in Poland, and we start with a trial lot where a new supplier is involved. Payment and trial terms are agreed with each supplier. Read how we buy for price basis, transport and minimum lots, then send your offer through the supplier form or the partner page. You can also write to biuro@eurocieleta.pl or call +48 691 900 728.
